What made you want to work with BYSSI?

“The disparities in educational outcomes/experiences of Black youth in Peel are longstanding issues that have never received enough attention or focus. Part of this challenge in youth services was due to the lack of race-based data to represent what the Black community has been communicating for several years. I learned about the BYSSI project at a time where policies, reports, data, board initiatives and funding sources were finally leading us to a place where Black students were becoming priority to some degree. Through my work within the region I have always been aware of the innovation and amazing program delivery coming from Black-led and Black-serving organizations, so I jumped at the opportunity to work alongside some of these groups to lead a project focused on educational outcomes for Black students.”

What do you enjoy about working with BYSSI youth/families?

“Although my work is focused on the management, development and evaluation of the initiative, I take time to lead programs and connect with our families at various points. I truly enjoy the gratitude and sense of hope that radiates from the families we work with. For me that has always been one of the biggest indicators that our community needed a program of this nature and it was long overdue.”

One comment about the Education and Black students in Peel?

“We need our Black children to thrive, and in many ways education becomes a gateway for opportunity. Supporting educational outcomes for Black students in Peel needs to be prioritized because our future depends on it.”
